do mains operated ones work the same pretty much as standard ones?

i have sand though not gravel. when i used to use a mains operated one it worked cleaning the sand but i need a new one and id rather spend £5 than £25 so if the normal ones are the same power as mains i might as wel get that.

I have used both and prefer the non powered one... It just seems much easier to me and unless you dont want to do waterchanges with the vaccing you might as well by the regular one... Or even better a python clean and fill.

powered ones just mean you dont have to clean and do a water change at the same time as iairj84 says. but then i like to do my gravel, whenever i like, so i would go for powered. guess it just what you need, none is better per say.
