You dont need to be confused - just read the cycling link ive given you above which will explain everything and gives you clear instructions on what to do. Your tank will need water changes every single day sometimes twice a day ( if the toxins get high for) 6-8 weeks if you want to keep them alive. Once your tank is CYCLED then you can do a once a week water change of 25-30%.

just taken readings of my tank water, using the strip test, readings are as follow :

Chlorine - 0
Ph - 6.8
KH - 3
GH - 8
NO2 - 0
NO3 - 0

are these readings as they should be? last time i've done a water change is 24hrs ago

What water conditioner are you using.

Some conditioners can bind toxins and the test strips will not detect them. Which is good but, you will need to test every 12hrs for a few days, then reduce to 24hrs until you are sure you are cycled.

The results you have given are good. KH is a little low but is the same as mine. Certainly good enough for Guppy and Neon.

Paper strips are useless - they are not sensitive enough to make accurate detections - if you keep fish you should have a liquid test kit - API freshwater test kit is the best.

Test strips are difficult to read and very often don't read below 0.5

It is recommended to keep Nitrite and Ammonia below 0.25ppm

There wasn't an ammonia reading there though was there?

Pick up the API Ammonia liquid tester. It is probably the most important test.

Continue changing your water until you have this test.
