Those of you who frequent the beginners section may now I seem to be having some problems cycling my tank and up until now the fish seem to have been fine. However, I now have:

1. Mickey mouse blue platy with a single white spot on his tail
2. Red wag tail platy with a split tail

I do not have a quarentine tank as of yet as it is on day 2 of it's fishless cycle so I cannot quarentine either fish.

What should I treat for? I have both melafix and white spot treatment, and I know I can't use both. There is salt in the tank anyway.

The fish do not seem distressed, no flicking, rubbing or apparent clamping and the blue mickey mouse [male] has been chasing the females lots:

I'm about to do a 30% water change, what should I do next

Many Thanks!

The spot on the tail is it the size of a grain of salt or biggger, split tail liverbearers are prone to them, the salt should help.

Bigger than than grain of salt but not much so. It's the only spot too, examined the others pretty thorughly [black tails thank god] and no spots.

It's dosn't sound like whitespot to me, is the spot fluffy, have a red edging to it, or a red spot in the middle of it.

Ever so slightly fluffy, no red on it. It looks like it did when he had fin rot before but that was weeks ago, surely he can't have it again?

Should I treat with melafix then?

Right it's bacterial you will need anti fungus and finrot med by interpet, also i would buy the interpet anti internal bacteria med as well, just in case, can you issolate the fish.

I only have melafix. Last time it worked a treat.

My quarentine tank is cycling [fishlessly thank god] so there is no chance of any kind of isolation. He's quite lively at the moment and feeding well.

You could try that till you get the med, does the spot look like a greyish white, also i would keep an eye out for red appearing round the edges or in inside of it, columnaris has many diguises.

Very much white. I'll need to keep an eye out. Never heard of columnaris before :(

I'm sure you have heard of it, however it is often called different names. Columnaris is often called fungus, mouth rot/mouth fungus, or saddle back disease. It can cause white patches, ulcers, open sores. Do a google search for it, it should bring up many results.

treating with melafix just now :(

This is going to screw up the cycle again isn't it?

Well it dosn't help, but it shouldnt alter water stats to much.

I've never seen melafix send a tank into a cycle, however, you should really look for some stronger meds. In my opinion, melafix is a weaker antibiotic. I only use it preventively (like when a betta jumped the divider).

I understand what you are saying but all the shops are closed right now, so I'd rather treat with a weaker anitbiotic whilst the symptons are comparatively mild than leave it all together. It hopefully might prevent or at the very least slow down the spread and given that i can't quarentine, hopefully it will stop the other fish from getting it too
