Noooooo!white Spot? Fin Rot?-help!

I just cannot understand why it has happened now.

I know I didn't do a fishless cycle [again, until I found this place I had no idea there was such a thing] but i have been doing pretty much everything i can to help the fish, daily water changes, adding salt, increased aireation, everything i could. My stats have never got above 0.5ppm on both ammonia and nitrite [although my nitrte has been at 0.5ppm for over 2 weeks] and if anything, my water has got better over the last day [ammonia has finally dropped to 0 and nitrite is just below 0.5ppm, but not 0.25].

I ahvent added any new fish or plants [not even plastic ones]. I thought it was all ok. :(

What did I do wrong?

01 nitrite can kill some fish off if they are weak, and it does take it toll on the fish as they have to go through the ammonia and nitrite process, it's like living in a toilet, and it harms there slimecoat.

I already feel guilty enough about not doing a fishless cycle.

If I had followed the advice of the lfs where I bought the fish in the first place [don't bother doing a water change for the first 4 weeks] I probably wouldn't have any fish left at all. It's not like I haven't been trying my darndest to give the poor little things the best chance as it is.

As for taking them back to lfs whilst I cycled the tank fishlessly, I didn't really fancy taking them back there after some of the advice I had recieved. I get the feeling the lfs would have probably just let them die anyway because it would have only cost 4 pounds to replace them for me. Hardly a massive loss of profit.

And for the record, no I won't be going back there.

Sorry i know you are doing your best, but there is never a guarantee that fish will make it through a cycle, as it takes alot out of them, even there immune system can shut down, causing desease and death.

Unfortunately I know that now.

Though it's scant comfort, at least I'm cycling my quarentine tank fishlessly so if the worst happens and sick fish doesn't make it, I may well have somewhere to house his companions whilst I re-cycle [Fishlessly!!!] their 126 litre home.

It also means any new fish i get can be quarentined successfully [for at least a month] before they go in my main tank.

Well I've just checked on Blue [fish with spot] and he's chasing the ladies, so clearly he isn't feeling effect of what ever it is too much.

This has made me think, there isn't possiblity he could be injured could there? I have noticed one of the females trying to give him a nip [the sassy one] when she got tired of him chasing her. She didn't do any damage and he seemed to get message as he pretty sharpish left her alone [this was last week mind]

No, i've seen spot on the tail or fin alot of times usually bacterial, then again you never know.

Hmm.

It was just back when he originally had fin rot, he lfet the ladies more or less alone, only occasionally half heartedly swimming after them every now and then.

I have been watching him for 5 minutes now and he is one randy fish [tried to mount the poor grl with the split tail :S ]. I'm not too worried about the ladies as I have a 3:1 ratio and they seem well able to take care of themselves!

Good, well he seems to have alot of energy.

My fish are currently being treated for whitespot and they seem to have as much energy as ever, however my water stats did go up around the time that I first spotted the disease, hope yours pull through :)
