Nomore Cloudy Water! Hahaha`

the vinegar test is where you put a drop of vinegar on the rock to test if it is alkali, if it fizzes it mean it's not for tank use normally.

also what colour is the slate, purple? green?

.... havent you read the lfs and lps horror stories on this board... theyre all over and do a search for vinegar test, it should come up

hey guys my slate pasted the vinegar test...that was stupid...

i think ur jealous my water is clear and urs isnt,,

i think ur jealous my water is clear and urs isnt,,

now that is a stupid statement, i don't add things that will de-colour my water. my tank water is clear lol.

i'll bet anything it was the petrified wood, as I think i said in the other post. Anyway, I don't know why you're getting so defensive about this. The plants won't turn your tank green. You MAY have a mini cycle on your hands because even though the bacteria is largely in the filter, it is going to have to repopulate. You test the water to make sure your ammonia and nitrites don't get out of hand, also you really need too put some plants (live, plastic or silk) in the tank because the fish are going to become stressed quickly if they have nothing to hide in. just because your slate passed the vinegar test doesn't mean it was stupid. It's an important thing to know.

all my tanks are clear except for the big one that's cycling right now, so that was downright silly and i hope you meant it as a joke.

the people on this site have been trying to help you for a while, and i'm sure that most of us were happy for you once you finally got the water clean, we aren't jealous, nor are we hard hearted. If that were the case your problem would have been ignored from day one.

Don't put the petrified wood in. Leave it out, or but some in a clear container with water to see if that is indeed what was causing the green. Petrified wood really isn't wood anymore, it's rock, and completely mineralized, and minerals like to disolve and leech into water.

Oh, and algae is a plant. We studied it in botany :)

ok sorry guys i was just a little upset before...i put the petrified wood in a bucket with water and im gunna let it sit for about a week or so and see if it turns the water green....i hope it doesnt..

wat also sucks is i will never get the cave the same as it was before =(

wat kind of minerals does petrified give out and why would the fish store sell it if it does that?

What makes petrified wood colorful?

It is not wood that makes petrified wood colorful, but the chemistry of the petrifying groundwater. Minerals such as manganese, iron, and copper were in the water/mud during the petrification process. These minerals give petrified wood a variety of color ranges. Quartz crystals are colorless, but when iron is added to the process the crystals become stained with a yellow or red tint.

Following is a list of minerals and related color hues:

Copper - green/blue
Cobalt - green/blue
Chromium - green/blue
Manganese - pink
Carbon - black
Iron Oxides - red, brown, yellow
Manganese Oxides - black
Silica - white, grey

they may not know, or they may not care. it's hard to say, but sadly many LFSs are just after money and will sell anything they can get people to buy.

wow thanx alot...cus my dad said copper turns water green...thanx alot starry for ur help...

ok so i had the petrified wood in the tank for like 2 hours after the water change n my water hasnt turned green....im still gunna do the test...

If the wood turns out to be innocent, it may just been that the green in the water was an algae bloom. These can be caused by various factors: too much sunlight, overfeeding (which is where competition from the plants can help, plus evidently cutting down on feeds) and the general instability of a new tank.
I am not sure that your big water change need be that disastrous; as you rightly say, a lot of the good bacteria reside in the filter, anyway, and very little in the water.
It will still have been worth testing the wood, so you know it's safe.
Anyway, hope things go better from now on!
