I'm looking for a method to quieten my air pump a bit. It's in a cupboard under my aquarium, but the hum is constantly present. Would putting it in a wooden box (not airtight) lined with polystyrene do the trick? Anyone tried this? I'm also open to alternative ideas.

I read this in a fish magazine and there tip was too tie some string onto the pump and then suspend it in the air so it's not touching anything :hey:

Sitting your air pump on a soft surface will help somewhat but getting a better quality air pump will help much more.

Hi, what sort of pump would you suggest as an alternative quiet 1 as I need to replace my noisy one.

A few friends have had the same problem. They way they reduced the noise way to put it ontop of a sponge or filling from a cushion. Worked well. Polystyrene didn't work as well as its a more firmer surface.

I use an old computer mouse mat.

Keith.

Unfortunately, I have found that the quieter air pumps can also be quite expensive. It is one of the few places where I notice price making much difference in quality.
Filters all seem to work fine and each type is equally quiet or noisy compared to others of the same type. The tanks themselves are all good quality and vary mainly on appearance. Light fixtures do not vary with price so much as from make to make. Some manufacturers just seem to do a better job of building them, regardless of price.
