Hi all

I got given my Dads 48x15x18 tank today

It has a fluval 700 and also undergravel filter (2 pipe and airstones)

However the tank is in my bedroom and the undergravel filter is so noisy (pump)

Is there a way of making it quieter or can you even unplug during the night and replug in every morning

??

Any ideas please?

i would get a new externel or internal filter and run with the ugf for a month then turn off the ugf permenantly and remove in time if possible
they are not the quietest most effecient filters in the world

you can pick up quite good second hand filters on ebay

it odes have an internal flier (fluval700) aswell as the ugf, but doubt it would be strong enough on its own, id probably need 2 ??

if you unplug it the filter bacteria will die. buy a decent external or internal and notice the difference

That's interesting. How long does it take for the bacteria to die? I was having some water problems and losing some fish for a while but amnow on top of it. My point is that during this time I had to do a lot of water changes, including 1 75% change and a couple of 50% changes. Obviously to do this I had to unplug the filter as there was no water intake with the level so low. Also, when I clean the filter media it needs to be unplugged. Could this have been part of my problem?

For a tank that size (200 litres approx) you should consider an external like a fluval 205 or similar.
