'noise Pollution' Threatens Fish

Well it was obvious to me that fish can hear/feel sound,
When i purchased a African claw frog i was informed that they are very sensitive to water movement and my tank would be similar to myself being in a room with a jackhammer 24/7.
I can only compare my nice quiet filter being on 24/7 for my fish is like try to sleep beside a petrol lawmower.
& everytime i turn my filter off to do a water change,is it just me or do my fish simultaneously mouth the words "Thank god"

Regular rhythmical noise is fine, most living beings quickly filter this out (as part of their natural adaptation to new input).

In an aquarium noises that would affect fish are really: anything that bumps/bangs stand or glass, lid lifting/dropping, loud music (especially heavy bass), heavy foot falls, possibly loud traffic (depending on tank placement), shouting/kids etc.

All of these things 'shock' the fish, and resonate well through such small volumes of water.

So provided you have wisely selected your aquariums positioning, its not really a problem for the average aquarist.

My tank is situated next to my fridge, when i accidentally let go of the fridge and it slams just the slightest little bit, the fish instantly dart so its obvious that it shocks them. They cant be too bothered about the internal filter I have as the look like normal fish to me..

i have a speaker on the wall above my fish tank and the idea of music playing now makes me cringe for my fish.

and the filter making a noise; i imagine its like people manage to sleep with clocks ticking, ceiling fans whirring, next door neighbours TV going lol, you eventually zone out of it all
