I was wondering. If a male seems to be quite happy (meaning his fins are full, not droopy and he is active and attentive, even flaring at himself every so often, lol) should I be concerned if he's not making any bubble nests? I don't want to breed him or anything, but it seems to me from all the post I've been reading on here that nest making is a sign of a happy, healthy fish. Is this true? Should I be worried?

Ive had a male that never made a nest but was kept the same as all the others. Usually they will make nests when happy and healthy but not always. I wouldnt worry

you shouldn't worry as long as your betta is still swimming you shouldn't worry he'll be fine

Is there anything on the top for it to build a nest in?

1 of my bettas I've had for 3+ years has never built nests, but I put in a little duckweed and it blew a nest that day..

I know my little guy (Zero) wouldn't build a nest in his 5 gallon, no heater... I moved him to a 10gallon to breed him and he built a nest the first day... Heating and slow filtration have alot to do with it...

Bubble nests are a sign of a horny fish... He may happen to be happy too, lol. Perhaps yours has control of his urges ;)

My yellow dont do bubble nests, just looks at me with his cute little blue eyes and waits to be fed. :hyper:

i have two fish... daniel used to blow bubble nests for me... really huge ones, but as soon as i got mckay he stopped... *tear* i really think he is jealous, but he's happy as far as i know cause he keeps swimming, eating well and every once in a while he'll flare at something if i put it too close to the bowl...

daniel will blow a nest every once in a while, but only a small one

mckay has never really blown bubble nests... i'm guessing he's happy cause again, he's actively swimming and eats and always seems "happier" when i come in to the room

i doubt i should be concerned about my boys.... considering they're relatively "happy" but i do miss seeing their bubble nests :(

Thanks for the reply Frostpixie. But I now know that a male doesn't have to blow bubble nests to mean that he is happy. I posted this question over a year ago right after I got my first VT, Alpha Betta. I now have 5 happy, healthy male bettas, including Alpha Betta still. Thanks for your concern though. :D

Where did you even find this post? It must have been way buried by now. LOL

this is happening allot, its the similar thingy box at the bottom of the page, it drags up old posts as well as new

That's the same with mine. My betta Raj (RIP) never made a bubblenest, didn't even attempt to make one, but one day I put a wide leaf sag plant in his tank, and the leaves hung at the top and before I knew it, he had made himself a cute little bubblenest up under one of the leaves.

It's the same with my betta Sherbert. He doesn't make a nest unless he can make it up under something.

I wouldn't worry if you do have something he could make one under and still nada.
My betta Rex is very happy, but very lazy when it comes to making a bubblenest. I've actually spotted him blowing a few bubbles up under the styrofoam in his tank (on purpose), but after a few blows, he stops and goes and does something else.
