well, i got a new firefish, and acclimated him but when i woke up this morning, he doesnt seem to be doing real well. Hes hanging on the bottom and kinda lying on his side. if something comes around, he still jets away, but then just kinda floats. do i need to be worried?

thanks for the fast reply, but unfortunately little firefish didnt make it :( gonna take a water sample to the fish store, maybe my readings are off or something. But everything else in the tank is fine, which makes me think that he might have had a pre-existing condition. He seemed healthy in the store.

Please let us know some details of your setup, filtration, tank stats ie ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, sg, stocking. The more you give us the better.

just ran all parameters, ammo, nitrite nitrate all at 0, filtration = 12 pounds LR and 215ish gPH of flow. SG is at 1.023. PH is 8.2. Stocking = 1 ocellaris clown, 1 scarlet skunk, 3 blue legg hermit, 3 scarlet reef hermit, 1 turbo snail, 4 astraea

hmmm seems stats are fine, but doesn't sound like normal behaviour. I bought a firefish last week and he was swimming around normally on his first day. Is he eating? Did he seem healthy at the LFS?

He was shy like we had expected for a firefish, but he did take food, then we went to bed and woke up this morning and he was on his side then from the time of the first post and he went down hill in about 15-20mins.

Sounds like prehaps acclimation could be the cause.... I found that and have herd if badly acclimated most fish and inverts die or become sick in under 48 hours. How did you acclimate the fella?

floated him in the bag for 45 mins for temp, then opened the bag, and gave him 1/4 cup of tank water every 15 mins until the bag was full, about 1 hour total. so total acclimation time was almost 2 hours.

:rip: poor little firefish.

I think these things just happen sometimes. Sounds like you did everything properly

i agree, now that me and the missus have been thinking about it, when we got him into the tank to float in the bag, he was kinda contorted in a bag corner for a bit, so i think there may have been a pre-existing condition.

i dunno, i had the LFS run the water for everything and they sad all the params are fine, a little high on phosphates (which, incidentally is probably causing my algae on the sand) i dunno....just life i guess
