Cycle start april 7th. Today is day 25 (I think..can't add this early lol) I got a nitrite spike 2 maybe 3 days ago (Lost track of my logbook ugh) but no more than 3 days. This morning I tested and my nitrite had dropped some. From everything I've read on here this shouldn't have happened already should it? Its a definite drop too. I was testing at 5.0 for a couple days (so I know it wasnt just 1 test done wrong or anything) and now this morning its between .50 and 1.0 as far as I can tell. My tube is showing a purple that looks like it should fall between there. I use the API master test kit and as you all know the nitrite chart colors are:

sky blue
lt purple
pink tinged purple
magenta
all the way down to a dark pink

I've got a dark purple...not pink tinged so it looks like it should fall between the pink tinged and the magenta to me
[

[grrr I hope this doesnt mean that something went wrong for them to start dropping so quickly. Also they didnt go off the charts but it still counts as a nitrite spike when it reached 5.0 right?

I wouldn't call a quick cycle a bad thing!! Just make sure you keep adding more ammonia everyday as the bacteria will feed on this to create the nitrite to feed the bacteria that feeds on that. sounds fine to me :good:

Oh I'll be tickled pink if a quick cycle is all that is going on! I cannot WAIT to be done..and Im sure all on here can't wait for my cycle to finish either as Im posting every dang day almost with questions or problems.

Hubby wondered if maybe the nitrites are dropping a little bit because Im only adding ammonia once a day and there is a good chunk of time where there is no ammonia to add to the nitrites. I played with my adding schedule a bit. I was doing my testing at 8 am but not adding ammonia until 1ish in the afternoon. Yesterday I added at 9 am and when I tested at 11pm there was only about .50. If that cleared out by say midnight that means there was 8 hours for the nitrites to catch up on processing what was already there. Which IMO is probably a good thing right?

At least my ammonia is processing in roughly 24 hours I guess ::sigh::: at this rate my nitrites will be done before my ammonia bacteria are fully there!

Your adding ammonia of 4-6ppm at 9 and it is down to 0.5 by 11? Holy crap, got some super bacteria there. But if this is the case, thats fine. Your other half is prob right with his hypothesis. Just keep going and before you know it, the nitrite will be all done and you'll be good to go :good:

yup, what ox5477 said

sounds like it's all go :good:

9 AM adding and yeah its down to between .50 and 1.0 by 11 PM....in 13 hours not 2 hours LOL

oooooooooo... that makes much mroe sense. I really thought you meant in those 2 hours. At 11pm I would hope its almost all gone seeing as you want the filter to be able to remove the 4ppm of ammonia in 24hrs. Sorry for the misunderstanding

Lioness, I hope that's it for you and you are close to sky blue.

I had some periods of dark purple that dropped to very light purple but then went back to dark purple, so it still stretched out for a long time, but then finally (Day 61 I think it was) it was suddenly extremely pale blue. Ever since then it has been able to take anything that gets thrown at it and turn it into pale blue. Now these Nitrite eaters seem to be more robust than my ammonia eating ones, which seem to have fallen back a lot somehow during our tank breaking episode.

Anyway, if its a race here I hope you beat me and get cycled first! Wouldn't wish for any company in the hall of shame for super-slow fishy preps, lol!
