Hi all, I am cycing a new small 17 liter tsnk using the Ammonia drop and wait method, I added the 5ppm of Ammonia to the tank about 3 weeks ago, Also the media in the filter is mature but was running without ammonia for a couple of months so obviously bacteria probably died, Anyway my Ammonia has never actually dropped and stayed at 5ppm but 24 hours after adding this the Nitrite was at 5ppm and this is how it stayed for a 3 weeks, I checked today and for some reason the nitrite is at 0ppm but Ammonia still at 5ppm
Why would this be?
If i could guess i would say it is because this tank was initially fully cycled and would convert 5ppm Ammonia through Nitrite to Nitrate in less than 12 hours, I then added 5ppm daily for 4 weeks (waiting to get a fish) but did not get one in the end so stopped dosing tank and left it like that for a couple of months, I then decided i would re-cycle the tank so changed 95% of the water and started again, Thus where i am now. Was the Nitrite i was seeing to do with the old water? maybe i should have done 100% water change and complete sand/media clean?
Any help would be appreciated.
