Hi Guys

Can someone please tell me what the optimum nitrate levels are to keep fish in, can you give me a low reading(if one) and also the most it should ever be.

Thanks

Just.

The ideal nitrate level is 0 but this is pretty unlikely apart from in very heavily planted set ups with very low stocking of fish.

The upper level shouldnt ever be more than 60ppm for common tropicals and should be below 40ppm for sensative species, although some tapwater sources may have nitrate readings higher than this so keeping the nitrates as close to source levels as possible is the best you can do.
