I just got done fishing and I have some nightcrawlers left over that I am currently freezing. I'm planning on cuting it up real small for my fishes in my tank. Just wondering if it was a good idea. Everyone talks about redworm but nights crawlers are a lot bigger. I have the following fishes:

1 Gold Gourami
1 Kissing Gourami
2 Blue Gourami
2 Platies
3 Black Tetra
10 Ghost Shrimp
1 Freshwater Crabs

well it depends did you buy them from a tackle shop or get them from the garden, if you got them from the garden they could have been in contact with chemicals so i wouldn't feed them to my fish if they were from my garden but if you bought them from a tackle shop they might be ok, ive never tried worms with my fish.

p.s i go fishing alot and worms are the best bait to use especially for perch :D

Redworms are better because the skins aren't as tough and like guppy man said there is less chance of them coming in contact with chemicals.

I use both when fishing and feed the nightcrawlers chopped up to my pond fish or big cichlids occasionally but chopped redworms are better for most fish.

i dont use worms period anymore.unless im catching bull head pr baitfish.i fish w/ lures like spoons or plugs for northerns, muskie, and tigers.

i have been wanting to try out feeding worms to fish so let me know how it goes

I froze them hoping it would be easier to cut up but it wasn't (maybe my knife wasn't sharp enough). The pieces were too big for the fishes, and for the pieces that were small enough the fishes would just spit them back out. They seem to like the "guts" more than the "skin". I guess they don't like new things. Nightcrawlers are pretty big, I'll have to try Bloodworms to see if they are any different.

Oh, I could of used a food processor but I don't think the wife would like me blending worms with it.

I'm always leary about adding something to my tank that I have no control over. You just don't know where those worms have been. I DO know that Hikari have frozen tubifex and bloodworms that have been treated to reduce contamination AND...the fish love them. Although the texts say tropical fish love outdoor worms, I'd play it safe with your tank. It's much easier to buy or order frozen verse treating for illness or losing livestock. JMO. SH

We feed our gobies, puffers, parrot cichlid and frog with earthworms bought from a pet store that are sold as live pet food or occasionally online (in the UK) from Worms Direct who again, sell cleaned live worms specifically as fish/reptile/amphibian/bird food.

Earthworms are very very nutritious and are an excellent source of protein.

If you are having trouble chopping worms go to any good fishing tackle shop and ask for some choppie scissors, they are just like normal scissors but with 3 sets of blades and make the job a lot easier.
