Hi, i am thinking of getting a 6ft tank as soon as possible for the fish i have in my 4ft x 15" x 18" tank. I'm keeping the 4ft tank as well but just wondering what to turn it into after.

These are the likely setups:

Discus, tetras in a planted tank.
Two oscars
One big catfish eg red tailed cat or shovel nose (not to sure on this one tho)
or
a cold water tank with Carp

Cant decide which to do, any help???

Discus need shoals of 6+ really, your tank wouldn't be big enough for that IMO.

It's not big enough for one oscar let alone 2.

A RTC or TSN will grow way way to big for your tank.

Crap also grow big.

at least someone replied. everything is going to be in baby form.

i know they would eventually get too big, but i'll have a think of which other setups i could or if anyone has any suggestions then i would be greatful

Unless you have the space and finances for a 16x6x6 foot aquarium or indoor heated pond within the next 3 years then forget the RTC or TSN as both of these have the potential to grow to 4 feet or more.

Your best bet is the discus as these can stay in the tank for life without being cramped.

cheers mate. the cats were an idea but to be hoest i havent got room for one. thnk i will go for discus or unless something else catches my eye.

If it were me, I bung some low maintenance plants in there like cabomba, amazon sword & java fern etc, then completely stock it up with a nice shoal of neon tetra (and perhaps some shrimp to keep it nice & clean).

Add some mopani or bogwood & it would look great!

Simple, cheap, & yet effective.

Never thought about that setup, cheers Underwurlde. that would look pretty good

just want to ask what other fish can you put in with discus, or should i say which cant you put with them

Just like you, I've thought in excruciating detail what to do with my 40 gallon once I get it....

So here we go~

A: You could do 1 pair or 2 pair of angles (make sure you define them as pairs in the store). Then, the tank is 4 feet long... So it can house a Senegal Bichir! His mouth could fit over a neon or glowlight perhaps, but not an angel  And he'll get big enough that the angels won't be a problem to him.

You could then plant the tank, and perhaps add something else from your lft, like a shoal of 5 roseline sharks ( if you have 150 to spend on them... but if you planned on discus, this'd be a nice alternative). Just make sure you either get them while the senegal is small, or get them at 3" plus so that the senegal isn't gonne eat them. That'd be one expensive meal. Also, A false flying fox is a very nice fish to consider that most people toss aside.

B: The tetra tank.

for a four foot tank, that's a great support. Heavily plant it and leave a middle swimming space. Then you can have many different kind.

7x cardinal tetra
7x Black Neon Tetra
7x Glowlight Tetra
7x rummynose tetra
7x Lemon tetra

Now for the bottom dwellers.

7x Kuhli Loach
7x Some kind of small cories.

then you could add in... an army of amano shrimp, as well as some bamboo shrimp :D
20-40x Amano Shrimp
5x bamboo shrimp.

And that's probably the tank i'd go with if i were you, but only if you heavily planted it. Water Wisteria would be my choice in such a tank.... Byt yeah.....

You could also do one humongout Female Betta sorority.....

Like, 30x Female betta, Heavily plant it, and let shrimp run all over the bottom. like, 40x amano shrimp and 10x Bamboo shrimp. Dunno....

Just my suggustions
