tank finished cycling about 2 weeks ago YEY. i got 4 small damsels to put in there as they were only 10$ each at the time and a couple of hermit crabs. just wanting to know is 2 hermit crabs enough or would you guys recomend more and is it a must to have them or do they just keep the algae growth down?

ive decided to steer away from doing a preditor tank now aka(lionfish and spotted grouper), as 4ft probably wont be big enough in the long term although i would like to get a bigger tank soon. so ive decided to go with possibly some schooling anthias and tangs! i have a T5 light 4 globes but i will probably steer away from corals at this stage because im not sure if ill end up getting tangs or not.

so to my question :) how mature would you say to get my water at to the stage of putting more sensitive fish like angels, tangs, bird mouth wrasse and ive also been seeing the snowflake eel popping up a bit lately.

i understand itll probably be a few months yet i just thought id ask and find out.

oh and i dont think they will but the fish that i have: blue devil, yellowtail blue devil, angel like (yellow and silver) fish and a black and yellow devil. i dont know if devil is the right word but thats what theyre refered to from a diving point of view. im pretty sure theyr all damsels so yeh just wondering what they will cause problems with? obviously clowns. i will plan to keep this most probably in the future but as i want to get a family of clowns which get imported from Nrth auz, ill wait for the tank to mature a bit more, and probably have to get rid of the damsels or might see how they go at first as i probably wont get any credit for taking them back at 10$ each.

i think you will struggle to give the damsels away unfortunatley. Wel thats the case around here.
Will you be QT the tangs?

QT? sorry do you mean quarunteening? i dont have a quarunteen tank. just my main. all i could afford. Is there some recomendation about quarunteening tangs is there?

as i said im not to the point of choosing the nature of my tank yet as its only come out of its cycle a week ago and had 4 damsels in a week. i just wanted mainly to know how aged my tank needs to be befor adding stuff listed above? not saying ill get all or even some or any of them just giving an example of what i plan to get in their sensitive aspect of things.

yeah am aware i probably wont get rid of the damsels, ill do my bes though just see how they go with other tank mates, their only very small so maybe theyll be ok, if not ill classified them for give aways or maybe i can put a guarde on the pump and netting over the part which comes out of the bioballs area and have them in the big open space in the sump HEHE. evil thoughts, joking!

well tangs are prone to white spot. Depending on how 'in' you are with your LFS they may do it for you. mine save fish for people for months in their QT tank. There are stories floating about of people adding a tang and then losing 70% of the stock to white spot.

yeah im pretty in with the LFS but i dont think they have qt tanks. but i guess i could buy it then ask them to hold it for 2 weeks, if theyll do that! duno, i mean im more leaning towards angels and a snowflake.

any idea how mature my tank needs to be to hold angels, birdmouth wrasses and snowflake eels?

If your tank is cycled and paramaters are testing ok, then a tang will be fine to put in. I have kept tangs for years with no white spot outbreaks, just buy your fish from a reputable seller and there won't be a problem. A cleaner wrasse or cleaner shrimps would be a good idea as they will remove any white spot or fungal infection you may encounter. As long as water quality is kept in pristine condition then you will be fine :good:

tangs need more space then some predatory fish.

if you did want a tang i would go for 1 either a yellow tang or a smaller bristletooth variety, imo 4foot is not big enough for any acanthurus long term there just get stressed.

a cracking hardy fish is a comet grouper for something interesting that dosent get too big :good:
