My Bettas House In New York
I was in wal*mart this morning and decided to check out the fish (the have really good prices on some of there fish and I was looking for a couple new otos) anyway I was walking past the bettas which are on shelves over top of the sink. When I looked over I saw a 1 gallon bowl in the sink, and to my complete horror discovered that there were FIVE male bettas in the bowl :S  two of them were dead

I immediatly searched the store for some kind of compitant employee. When I found someone I dragged them over to the fish and demanded an explanation. They said that sometimes kids will dump males together and watch them fight, I told them I was aware of them, but those males had obviously been together for quite some time. And he didn't have a response for that.

Well needless to say I took the 3 remaining males. They wouldn't give them to me for free, but did discount them %50 percent because they were "damaged goods"

The male in the worst condition had open sores everywhere, he had no fins at all, was extremely pale and couldn't really swim at all. When I got them home he went into a shallow 1 gallon so he could get to the surface easily. he colored up a bit but never really even attempted to move, he just layed down at the bottom, about an hour later he was gone :-(

The second boy was covered head-to-toe in fungus and open wounds, his dorsal and anal fins were pretty well intact, but his tail was gone. He came around a little when I got him home, but passed away about an hour ago. :-(

The third male, a lovely pink/purple veiltail, was the best off of them, he has ich, and a small patch of fungus on his head. But he has most of his coloring, no stress lines, and is happily exploring his 1 gallon quarantine tank. *fingers crossed* he'll make it. I'll post updates and pictures and he hopefully improves.

That is so sad Jaded, makes me sick that they keep fish in this way. :-(
I'm so sorry that you lost two of them but at least you tried to do something.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for your other one and hope that he bucks up.
The saddest thing of all is the fact that you can't educate some people, no matter how hard you try.

I know this is ugly of me, but Wal-Mart makes me sick with some of their incompitant employees. I mean, if you're going to carry fish you need to have someone that knows something about them. Those bettas were probably in fairly bad condition in the first place and to save space or whatever - they probably just dumped them all in the same bowl! That infuriates me!! Best of luck with your new little guy! We're all routing for him!

:fish:

and you wonder why people around here don't like walmart and i get jumped when i say ours sucks  .
good job on the rescue though, good luck with the little guy.

You would think that they would care and if 'kids' did that remove the fish and the 'kids' Lets hope the remaining one pulls through.

I don't know about the stores in your area, but I know of 3 Walmart stores here where I have had a VERY hard time finding someone to help me in the fish department. I don't think any of them have a person assigned to stay in that area. I have had them paged several times (on several occasions) and no one ever came. A friend of mine was telling me the other day how she even got the fish out herself because no one ever came (and this was in a completely different city)! Sad...but so good to see you are setting up rescue tanks. What are you doing with them afterwards? I'm assuming you are keeping them in the 2.5 gallon tanks? How many are you setting up to rescue?

it shocked me that the shop assistance new what the kids were doing, but didnt try to do anything about it.
people shoudl treat fish with lots more respect. bloody kids, shouldnt be allowed in pet shops if they cant behave.
hope the 2 bettas lost will RIP and have a better after life than before.
good luck with the survivor.
well done you for saving atleast one :good:

You didn't get jumped... Like I explained in the other thread I simply think its unfair to lump all the stores into the same category because there are some out there that aren't bad

The boys doing good, I'll snap some pictures tomorrow... I've named him Parker.

i absolutely do not like walmart i don't even know why they bother selling fish. it frsustrates me to see the fish there getting treated poorly. its a good thing you found them and did something about it :good:

Awe best of luck!!!! So glad your having success with the last guy!!! Sorry to hear about the other two though.... :flowers: :flowers:

we dont have wallmart but petsmart is as bad...IMO the one here is anyway. My fave betta shop, worried me a little while ago they had had 30 bettas in, he went to find me a particular colour, and came back with my cambodian. Now, what really worried me is I asked if I could go with him and pick one out of their stock, and he immediately said NO, too much of a hazard in their back room..things on floor.... I wonder how they were kept?

Here it is very usual that they are kept in little plastic bags. At the best, they are in small plastic cups with a lid, the ones that are used for flakefood, or chilisauces.

Wooo..Well Done Jaded For Rescuin Them :hyper:... Lookin Forward To Pics. What Type Of Bettas Are They?
