Do you have a test kit to check your ammonia, pH, nitrates and nitrites? If not, you really need one of those so you can make sure you are providing a good environment for your fishy friends.

Agree! A good liquid-reagent test kit would be perhaps my first piece of equipment even prior to a tank, lol. Its a great learning tool for the beginner as the thing you really want to get straight is the "biofilter" and how it works with your water chemistry.

Most of us like and use the API Freshwater Master Test Kit, so it provides a bit of "common lingo" within the beginners forum here. There are other liquid kits that will also do the job however, if that one's hard to find.

Another thing is to begin doing your "Homework!" Read 3 articles in the Beginners Resource Center (at the top of this subforum) The one on the "Nitrogen Cycle".. the one on the Fishless Cycle and the one on the Fish-In Cycling Situation. There are other important articles but this will get you primed for the first and most important questions.
