Hello
I posted in marine but I think I shod have started here first.

I have a 55gal tank and want to start a FOWLR setup. I read that if I have LR I won't need filters, is that true? I would like to start with LR before I add any fish. Do I still need a sump and if so what's it for if I don't need filters, circulation? I know I would have the heater in it just didn't know what else it would be for. I think that's my main obstacle right now.
Thanks in advance, there a lot of info oh here to last me a while

i think LR helps with filtration, but is not always enough. You need powerheads to circulate some water across the rocks to keep the bacteria alive. A sump is a biological filter that includes LR, possibly a refugium and also helps add to the quantity of water in your tank. You can do all of your filtering in a sump to keep your tank free of excess LR and the heater etc.

my saltwater knowledge is really really limited though. You may also need a protein skimmer.

hope that helps a little!

Check the saltwater forum they're much more knowledgeable
