Hi all

I've kept tropical fish for about 15 years now, mostly easy stuff, live bearers, tetra, corydoras, pleco, plus glass fish, koolie, flying fox also had fancy goldfish, mixture of other loachs and a tank of mixed barbs, fighting fish........... etc..

I'm now back to my favourites guppies and platies.

a little about me in my thirties, married , no children, suffer with a number of phyiscal conditions, very severe fibromyalgia being the worst, asthma, sciatica, blar blar..... I used to exhibit show cavies (guinea pigs), mostly rare breeds and did really well with them, winning national club points several years and a local club points 4 years and have created a number of new colours/patterns, getting one accepted as new breed in 2002 and doing rather well with it, until my fibromyagia got worse, and I got more disabled and wasn't able to care for the numbers I had, still got my creation marten sable in two colours types and the sables I recreated from scratch in 1993. also had mixture of birds, from common budgie, to some unusual breeds of finch and also a mynah bird not the one most people would consider a mynah. had 3 species of gerbil, 3 of hamster, Degu, also was part in on creating a new rabbit breed, still have 4 of those left, one 15 (at xmas) year old cat.

I love the guppies because of the range of colours and patterns and as I don't breed to show, doesn't really matter to me if the male is a shiney greeny yellow snake skin pattern and the female has a glowing orange red and blueish white band on the tail. I just love watching to see what they will have and have in the past had some really strange ones out, maybe a fluke of nature but got one with a very long (longer than seen anywhere before) tail and top fin that split into a forked shape (appologises as I am not up on fish parts, also for spelling, I'm somewhat dyslexic, but never mind! LOL). Platies not so keen on the mickey mouse ones, but had a lovely one years ago a blue and green metalic effect body and yellow fins and tail, never seen anything like her since either :(

I do have a question about guppies, but will post it in the right section.

well better shut up I suppose before I write you all a novel!!

Hello, and :hi: to TFF!
I think fishkeeping is a good hobby for disabled people. Fishkeeping can be very relaxing, and its veru soothing. Not a ton of physical labor, well, except sometimes water changtes can be a pain.

Hi Silverlady and everyone

Yes they do keep me busy, one of my conditions means I never get deep sleep phazes so i awake feeling jus as tired if not more tired than when I went to bed, so they give me the reason to push past that need to lay in bed all day feeling. i know of a few with not as bad to as bad and they have given up doing stuff, so are worse off, people say to me, get rid of the animals if you are tired all the time. but all of them from cat, g pigs to watching the tank of fish, is so relaxing and very good for me well being, as worry and stress will flare the condition (mind you thats like many illnesses worry and stress can make it worse.

I love the fish, when I swopped to barbs and suitable tank mates to barbs for something different, but I missed the baby fish and watching them grow, so when the barbs all died off slowly over a few years, I went out and brought myself some guppies and platys again.

used to have 2 3foot tanks one of tropicals and one of fancy goldfish, but can only cope with a single tank now.

Saddly can't show you any fish shots, don't think I have added any photos and only one I might be able to find is off an overal fishtank shot with the odd coloured but pretty bluegreen metalic platy with the deep yellow fins, just about visible! LOL but if you did fancy looks at past and present critters (mostly past) my photos site is at http://photos.yahoo.com/crystalcavies. have to sort out about getting some fish photos, but not sure best way to go about it? as don't want to think I might harm the fish in any way like.

as for water changes hubby helps me do those.

thanks all for your welcomes to the group.
