Newbie Questions About Plants And Lighting

hey i've been looking at members' planted tanks and i've decided to go planted. i was wondering what plants would be easiest to start with, i only have a hex 5 gal to work with at the moment. i'm hoping i can get a bit of a carpet going on in the front and plants in the back gradually getting bigger. as for lighting would a 10 watt fluorescent bulb do a good job in a 5 gal.
