Keep on with the water changes. You do seem to be in a fish-in cycle. Keep up the daily water changes until the ammonia and nitrates consistently read 0 without you having to change the water. Only then would I resume normal weekly water changes. I am currently experiencing something similar. I think I added fish to quick and I actually had a nitrite reading last night(and this is with mature media from an established tank) I did a water change and checked this morning and it had dropped significantly. Depending on the reading when I get home, I may do another water change. I know its work but your fishies with certainly appreciate it :)

Great News for my fish today.

Today is the first day that a full 24hr period resulted in 0 nitrites. Nitrates are down to 0-20.

Question: I currently have my old filter and new filter in the tank running. The new filter has been running about 9-10 days now. How long should i keep the old filter in before i can remove it and not effect the nitrites again? I am afraid the old filter is probably holding alot of bacteria that the tank is using to normalize nitrites. But eventually i need to pull it off this tank and let it start a fishless cycle on a another tank waiting. I'm in no hurry for sure, i'm just not sure how to ensure a smooth transition.

Thanks all!

Wait about 6 weeks. Plus you won't have to do a fishless cycle on a new tank. The filter is already cycled. You might get a mini cycle, but the time you have to wait will be much, much shorter.
