Hi All

I've not kept fish before personally but they have been in the house before and i've adopted a tank with a couple of fish.

The tank was ver messy so i drained it, kept 2l of water for the fish to stay in while i scrubed it and washed all the muck out of the gavel then filled it back up with warmish water and put the fish back in with the old water.

This is unknown fish number 1, once i put it back in the tank it started doing forward rolls  but it seems to eb swinng alright now, i dunno what i've done to the poor thing.

Fish number 2 is some sort of black/white cat fish (i don't even know if it's alive tbh!) I've had the tank 24hrs and i've never seen the thing until i look this rock out and it was inside... but it never moved, it's just stuck inside it with it's mouth sucker thing. I did see faint breathing though so i'm guessing (hopefully) that this is what catfish do? Not alot?

So yea i'm complete newbie but i really want to do this as a hobby so i don't get bored and move these fish onto another owner.

I do want to keep dwarf puffers but i want to see how these fish go first. It's a 5gal tank so 1 puffer would be alright i think, then i want to move onto cichlids, then when i have more space maybe get a fw ray :good:

Anyway i'm off to browse the forum, cya later!

The fish in the pic might be a clown loach?

Also, catfish should be kept in groups of 3+, that might be why it is acting the way it is.

1 dwarf puffer will be okay in a 5 gallon tank.

It's alive!

Hello Ashy... Yes! ... it is a Clown loach you have in there and the other one is Acancadorus Spinosysomus (Spelling)???..... and Yea!!... Stick to us.... You'll grow into a pro!!!

Do you have a test kit?

If you do, can you test for Ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte, and pH, and then post the readings?

I'll get one tomorrow :)
If you plan on keeping fish in the long run, you best invest in a LIQUID test kit.

Strip test kits are in-accurate and no good.

The API Freshwater master test kit is a very good test kit that a lot of us use and trust.

£15 at the LFS, think it was PH and Nitrite/Nitrate. I thought it would only be a couple of quid. They said if i brought the water in they would test it for free. It'ss have to be another day. Thanks

Your LFS will use most likely use a strip test kit which is inaccurate.

You want a liquid test kit that tests for Ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte, and pH

That is if you are going to keep fish, if you are going to get rid of them soon, then dont worry about investing in a good test kit.

sorry but the catfish is actually a Platydoras armatulatus,
Also I'll admit i have no idea what the fish is but the one i'm looking at is definitely not a clown loach,

Looks similar to a spanner barb or banded barb

I also second this opinion, the striped fish does not look like a clown loach to me either.

Puffers need to be kept alone, and the fish you have will proberbly get too big for a 5 gallon tank anyway (whatever they are), so you may need to rehome.

Welcome to the forum btw!

I knew it wasn't a clown loach as it didn't have the he red tail or triangle markings, they are more circular. I'm sure it's been in the tank atleast 6 months. The catfish does need to go somewhere bigger, he's too big for his hiding place now.
