Hey all! I was woundering if there is any users who have a more advanced knowledge in swordtail breeding/ genetics. If you are please leave a message or leave some contact info for me Im a newbie breeder looking for a sensai to chat with and ask questions.

Also i have a few questions:

I have herd that lyretail swords' gonopodium becomes to long to funtion properly is this true because iam intrested in breeding lyretails.

Are there any breeders of swords thats are some what close to the pugetsound area in Wa State, im looking to expand my gene pool w/o spending allot of money on shipping.

Thanks for you time

i used to breed em, i can help you. lyretails can be bred, iv heard that rumor too and im almost sertain its untrue. for breeding theres not a whole lot uv got to do, make sure their tank stays clean and keep them well fed, then it'll happen  theres not rely enogh vereity in swords for genetics to get to complecated, what u c is what u get at a petstore, most if the time they are all pretty pure and u can go about crossing them urself. im sure you can come up with some awsome looking fish thogh, eswspecially if ur working with lyretails.

something else id like to mention is plattys, u can cross plattys with swordtails to transfer over colors, platys tend to be more colorfull but in doing this u will end up with both plattys and swordtails and then their still a kinda half and half mix -_- good luck

Thank you very much for the advice im sure ill be asking you some more questions in the near future.

Only prob I have seen in swordtail breeding is the turn around rate. If your trying to line breed them. It can take up to a year for a fry to start mating so it could be many years befor you get the fish your wanting to get.

hey Jesse,

i know it a long shot, but i live in BC Canada, right near the boarder off the I-5. I also work at a LPS and have acces to free livebearer fry all the time (infact, i usually take home any babies our store fish have and raise them and then give them away to good homes. ive become a bit of a fish raising fanatic... and lyretails are my fave. im always scouting for babies in our tanks at the store.) If you ever made a trip up here i could get you some... or vice versa.. if you tell me what you want, i'll let you know when i can get some, and we could always meet up. my only hesitation is transfreing animals over the boarder... but let me know. i'll be around... and i'm sure we could work something out.
