Just thought I'd say hello to everyone. I came back to fishkeeping (lots of house moving and a few rentals with no pet clauses made it difficult for several years) about 9 months ago.

Couple of my old clearseal 30" tanks survived the years away and convinced the other half to let me get one going, the other is looking for a suitable location in the house where the building dust won't get to it. Now got a couple of shoals of tetras, some corys and a few amano shrimp and am struggling to get used to very hard water, having previously kept fish is very soft water.

Fascinating to see the changes to the hobby after some years away. My FE Co2 is running nicely and has reduced the algae I managed to bloom considerably (can't quite clear the last bits of the filamentous stuff though, it's become the bulk of my maintenance).

Other than just saying hi. I was looking for any advice from those with stupidly hard tap water (tried rainwater but it seems to be falling out of the sky with ammonia in it, volcanoes perhaps? RO may end up being an option for me once I've built the utility) and any tips that may be related in getting rid of filamentous/hair algae. I've got Co2 running, plenty of fast growing plants, tried blackouts, dosing ferts, water parameters are better than the tapwater for nitrates (which tells me that either the plants or the algae are eating the nitrates). My next plan was to load in lots more plants when I'm setting up the fluval Ebi I got for subscribing to the PFK magazine. Hopefully I'll be able to stop the stupid stuff from growing faster than I can clear it.

Tap water comes out of the tap at 8.4, water hardness varies slightly but is listed by the water board as extremely hard. Can't remember the numbers off the top of my head on the test kits.

And thank you for the welcome :)

hello and welcome DrRob, i was in the same predicament as you, my GH was 26, the PH was 7.4 which isn't to bad. The TDS was 600! We now know that we should concentrate on Ph to much, more of the GH/KH of the water. This has more of an effect on the fish than the Ph. I have now swapped over to RO water, it has made a big difference with everything. I can now keep the fish i want to, the water clarity is awesome, the plants pearl a lot easier, as the C02 is getting absorbed better (there is some argument whether this is true, but i can deffo see more pearling). The con to using it is either setting up a RO unit or buying your water in.

Aye, I've been considering RO. Our utility should be built in the next month or two and I may be able to squeeze a unit in there.

No idea what sort of TDS levels I'm dealing with at the moment, but wouldn't be surprised if they were quite high.

The other option I'd considered was a half way house with a DI/carbon/sediment unit without the RO membrane. Not sure if it's worth the difference though.

Welcome aboard mate, sounds like you're well clued up and i look forward to hopefully learning some stuff from you over the coming months :)

:good:

I'd suspected that it would be the other way around. A lot has changed and I have a lot to catch up on. Scoured forums for a while and this one seems friendly and helpful (and knowledgeable), so I thought I'd drop in.

Having said that, anything I can share I will, and I don't mind people pointing out that that hasn't been done in the hobby for years.

Nah... i know nothing

What are your plans then?

Start a journal in the tank section Rob, i'm sure you will get plenty of followers.

I probably will for the new Ebi. Haven't decided where in the house to put it yet though. Part of me wants it somewhere easy to see, part of me wants it within range of the FE CO2 so I can run it off a manifold.

Thank you everyone, nice to feel welcomed.

Lovely to meet you and your other half this evening, sorry if it was all a bit rushed.

Hope you make good use of the tank, good luck with the algae.

:good:
