how do you stop all of the alge and how do you control snails?

welcome to the 'green side' ;)

Take a read of the articles pinned at the top of this section...particularly the lighting and algae ones. They will at least give you a good understanding of the basics that will be required to create your own underwater garden!

As a relative newcomer myself, I can honestly say that the best way to start a planted tank is to get the basics right first time around...there are a lot of false economies to be made, so probably the best bit of advice is to be completely sure of what you would like to acheive. Everyone can then help you choose the right equipment and fert regimes and get you started!
