Hi all.

have been given a 2ft tank and am planning a trop setup.

Am thinking about a large community setup so I know i am going for tetras or suchlike. One highly probable addition is a siamese fighting fish, wondering and hoping for some suggestions for tank mates for it.

Also, advice would be welcome with regards to the filtration setup and gravel and aquarium "decor"

Thanks all, looking forward to your ideas.

Siam fighting fish (betta's) are generally not compatible due to the general nippy disposition of tetras and the long flowing fins of a betta splenden male. Perhaps boraras (dwarf rasboras), danios or livebearers would be better choices although they need to be closely watched. Don't neglect inverts they are natures clean up crew and people that often tire from the fish find snails, shrimp and their hectic lives much more interesting.

How many gallons exactly?
What temp are you planning?
live or fake plants? (if yes then what lighting? and will you fertilise and add CO2?)

Gallons wise, the tank is 2 ft wide, 1ft high and 1ft in depth, not sure how to convert into gallons but i worked it out to be around 56 litres.

Not really thought of an exact temp yet in all honesty, ill defer to whatever fish i get, so im flexible there. I will probably go fake plants.

I would get a male Betta, 6 bororas botia, shrimp, snails and 5 corydoras or 4 khuli loaches

Am not familiar with Boraras Botia, is there any links to one for me to check out? I was toying with a swordtail also.

Is there a specific type of shrimp? and by snails im guessing you mean the large type ones, not the little sods that infest the tank when you buy plants?

cheers,

Bom

My bad meant boraras brigittae (botia is a genus of fish which are classed under the common name of loaches). Red cherry shrimp would probably be best as your a newbie or Amano shrimp. Snails only become a pest if you are allowing them to feed excessively through over feeding of your fish and not controlling the population, I quite like "pest" snails and add them to all my tanks. I would add malaysian trumpet snails and a couple of nerites.
