Hello all....I just got my first aquarium for Christmas
I've decided on an all Tetra tank.  My aquarium is 29 gallons. I have 5 of each, Bloodfin Tetra, White Skirt Tetra, Bleeding Heart Tetra and Electric Green GloFish Tetra....they all seem to live together very nicely....is this about the right number of fish for my tank ? or can there be more ?

Thanks !

about how big are they?

every inch of fish needs one gallon

i would say thats a comfortable amount, maybe add one more of each

Welcome to the hobby!

You are a little over the top, but not dangerously so. I wouldn't advise getting any more fish. The one thing I would point out, with you saying that you wanted an all-Tetra tank, is that Glofish(R) aren't a tetra, they are a genetically-engineered danio. My suggestion would be to rehome that species, if you were able to, and get 1 or 2 more of each of the genuine tetras.

Reasons for this:-

1) I hate genetically-engineered fish, there are so many beautiful natural fish, that we don't need to manufacture any others. As a matter of principle, I would always suggest to people not to keep them.
2) The fish upon which they are based are zebra danios, they like cooler water than the tropical tetras, and can ZZzzooom from one end to another in no time at all. They really need a 4' tank to be able to stretch themselves.
3) All shoaling species like to be in a group of at least 6 to display their most natural behaviour.

As a rule of thumb, you should have one inch of fish per gallon. You are overstocked as all your tetras will get up to two inches when adult so you'll have forty inches of fish in your tank.

You should think about returning at least two of the types pretty soon to prevent things from going wrong. Maybe even three of them ad increase the fourth to about 8. Then maybe you can get 4-5 smaller cory types to get you to maximum capacity.

I've always felt that rule to be over-restrictive. When I first started out, I was told 1cm per litre, which I now feel is a little too much fish for beginners. I tend to advise somewhere in the middle.

Thanks for the replies !  I made a typo (on my first post ! LOL ) I have 4 of each, so that should put me at about the right amount, right ?
and from what I've read about the Electric Green Tetras, they are not danios. Yes, I suppose they are genetically modified...but I am not willing to give them up, I like them and they do very well with my other fishies

Thanks again and I am happy to have found this forum

The original glofish(r) are definitely Zebra Danio, however having looked at the Glofish(R) website, it does indeed appear that they have done the deed with a different species that does look rather tetra-like. You live and learn!

In terms of fish concentration, 4 of each is fine. However, as I said previously, tetras are shoaling fish, and ideally like to be in groups of 6.

I would highly recommend giving up the glofish since I too hate genetically engineered fish. Then you could maybe get some corries instead.
