Do they all require soft water?

Are they easy to keep?

I would say no, i feel that many of the south american cichlids can happily live in hard water without a problem as will most malawi's
as for being easy to keep i would agree, provided water conditions are kept good, cichlids will thrive in the aquarium.

Most African cichlids need hard alkaline water, very different to New Worlds.
