Evening All,

I have recently setup a new tank after being out of the hobby for a few years.

I have a 35L tank and am running a Marina S10 filter which came with the tank. Everything was fine after the tank was running for a week with no fish, so I introduced 3 Molies, 2 Red Honey Gouramis, 1 Albino Cory and 1 Flying Fox. The water then turned a cloudy colour which I put down to the bacteria cycle taking place.

I carried out a water change last Friday and washed the filter sponge and cartridges out in the tank water. All fish were fine and everything was looking good. Water was still a bit cloudy but I could put up with that.

Yesterday I noticed the filter was hardly passing any water through it, so I decided to carry out another water change and once again clean the cartridges and sponge. Also my Albino Cory was looking rather sorry for himself and as he was the most active fish in the tank I was a little concerned with this. Anyway filter worked fine after cleaning it out and carrying out water change.

Today was a different story. Water is still cloudy and filter was once again not passing through much water. Therefore I decided to change a filter cartridge to see if this helped which it did. The only thing is my Cory had died and I am unsure why this is. All other fish look fine and are all happy.

The filter sponge is also now touching the back of the tank glass which I do not know if it was before. Does anyone have experience of these filters and if so what are your opinions??

Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks.

Your filter is uncycled. Read about cycling in the beginner's resource centre.

Do a 90% water change with warm dechlorinated water immediately, before your fish get any more poisoned with ammonia.

None of your fish are suitable for a tank that size. Return them to a shop, before you harm more of them.

I advise that you do a fish-less cycle, then stock your tank with appropriately sized fish, we can help with this.

First things first, after a week with no fish the water would be fine because there were no pollutants, all that changed when you introduced fish. the cloudyness is due to bacteria but not the autotrophs that carry out the nitrifying process, this is also what is probably clogging your filter

You are now in a "fish in cycle", you can read up the guidance notes in the beginner section of this forum. The cory probably died of ammonia or nitrite poisoning, you can probably prevent any more deaths by getting hold of a liquid reagent test kit and doing enough water changes to keep both ammonia and nitrite at 0ppm

Edit
Beat me to it kat

+1 for kats post, the fish stock isnt a great choice for the tank

Remember fish cant smile, makes it hard to spot a happy fish ;) A bit like my horses, they always have a long face :)
