Hi

Firstly what fish do you have in the 78L and i assume its fully cycled?
I assume you dont have cichlids at the moment as the tank is quite small? Cichlids like quite a high PH as i'm sure you know.
If you're going cichlid only, will you rehome the other fish, I didnt understand from the post if you have a community setup atm or something different?

Do you run an internal or external on your current setup? I would strongly recommend an external for the trigon because when I had cichlids they were messy as hell.

When I transferred my fish to a bigger tank, I used as much existing water as I could and topped up with fresh dechlorinated water, I then added my mature filter media from my old external into the new tanks internal filter and I also hooked up a new external on the tank. I made sure the temp and PH was stable and matched that of my old tank before i transferred the fish. You see if you transfer the media over to a new tank you're going to need something to feed the bacteria so it doesnt die off...i.e...fish. Its not clear from your post if your existing fish will be compatible in the new tank, and I also think that your media from your 78L, providing its mature, will not be enough to fully stock from the outset, so go with caution on that.

To properly advise, provide some more info and then we'll see if we can help.

Hi thanks,

I managed to switch over tanks the fish I have atm are 5 cherry barbs and a plec. Im not 100% sure if I am going for cichilids yet or not! anyway we did the switch over on Saturday I have just done a water test and think I need help to lower the nitrate! it is 250!!!

the nitrite is 0

So im guessing water change is the way to go? and how much? is there anything I can treat water with?

Many thanks

Katie

it is a tetra test strip I could have read it wrong! i will check! ;)

yeh on the theit little scale, next to the pink color it says 250. The test strips came with the tank. When I tested my tap water it stayed white. What should I do? my fish seem fine atm :S

you really need to get a liquid based test kit tbh test strips are notoriously inaccurate :/
Agree, A lot of the members including myself use the "Api freshwater master kit"

Keith.

Ok thanks, I can't get to fish shop today, do u think I should to a small water change? Like I say the strip showed no signs of nitrate from my tap water?

Katie

Hi Katie,
A small water change will not do any harm a tall.

Keith.

P.S if your nitrAte reading is 250 then i would be inclined to perform a 75%+ water change+gravel vac, sorry just read one of your other posts.

ok thanks, thats providing the test strips work lol!

Are they the tetra 6in1 test strips?, i would still edge on the side of caution and perfom your water change.

Keith.

yes they are the 6 in one, i only had a nitrite test, then these strips came with the tank so thought I would see how it was going!

Will carry out water change, but will have to wait till the toddlers go to bed!!

managed to change about 20 litres of water, and nitrate is down a little. should i do another change later? I didnt do more now cos my 1 year old is about to wake up 1
