Hi all

Well after 9 weeks in the hobby ive bought a new tank all ready- got the juwel rekord 120 and stand for £150, is this a good tank?

also i am looking at what fish to put in it once the cycle has been done. I am going to go for a fishless cycle this time. Unfortunately i go on holiday for a week in 4 weeks time and i cant envisage that the cycle will be done by then as i don't pick the new tank up till Wed this week.

Whats the best substrate( hope ive spelt that right!) to use? should i go for natural plants instead of fake?

How many fish can i comfortably fit in this tank? i am thinking of chichlids but can i pop other fish in there with them? if so like what

ahhhh can someone help?????

lol many thanks in advance

Dom

Hi back

Good tank :good: Well done for choosing the fishless cycle....have you got all the gen?

There is no 'best' substrate. It depends on 'the look' you might want to achieve and, of course, what fish you intend to keep. For instance, if you are going to have cory then sand is what they prefere but it is a little trickier to keep clean. Gravel is easier but as food can drop between the gravel then rot it is another source of ammonia and harmful bacterias.
Sand has my vote.

There is a 'rule of thumb' that states 1" of fish (allowing for adult size) needs 1 (uk)gallon of water. This being said, you would not keep a 10" fish in a 10 gallon tank!
Your tank being around 32 gallons allowing for rocks/decorations and substrate gives you 32" of fish. (easy innit!) Do remember though this is a rough guide and do allow for growth

Natural plants are going to be best overall but again, require a bit more thought. There are some pretty good fakes about (silk are best) but they do attract algae growth so can become expensive if replacements are needed.

Unless you add 'matured' media to your new filter then yes it would be very optamistic to complete the cycle in 3 and a bit weeks. You will, however, be needing a trustful person to be adding the daily amount of ammonia to keep you colony of bacteria alive..........good luck :good:

yeh ive read the gen on the cycle- kinda need to think about time really with me going away- i cant rely on the mother in law to feed me fish but dont think i can trust her with ammonia!!! unless i can add a massive dose before i go away?

I have a test kit but to be honest i struggle with the colours due to my colour blindness!! is there any test kits that do it by numbers?

does it need to be any special kind of sand for the substrate? can i mix it with gravel?

Think i will go with real plants- any recommendations? i gunna put rock in the tank and also a lil bit of bog wood- any online stores that will do the plants rock and bogwood? mind i am on a tight budget- 50 quid for plants sand and wood
