I am taking delivery of a new 6' x 2' x 2' tank in the next few days and was going to set it up as a low tech, low light, densely planted tank.

I have 6 bags of Fluorite and 50 kilos of fine gravel for the substrate and 5 x 58 watt fluorescent tubes in a home made hood and four nice pieces of bogwood which have been soaking for two weeks.

I already have a 4' low tech low light tank set up for three weeks and wondered about using the new tank as a paludarium. Would the lighting be OK and how high above the tank should the lights be hung assuming I half filled the tank with water?

I have a TetraTek 1200 cannister filter but would this be too much for a tank only half filled and could I use the return to create a waterfall?

Any help will be gratefully received.

Hi Keith,

Your lighting would be fine were it is. Be aware that a high humidity is requierd for such a tank, so a tight condensation lid is needed. Your filter will be fine, dont worry about over filtration, simply turn your flow rate down.
I good place to have a read around are dart frog websites and forums. They tend to keep many types of frogs in paludariums so some hints may be found.

Have a look through these links.

You will be amazed at how many plants you could have, have a look through here.

Your major problem will be construction of the layers, fun though.

Graeme.
