Hiya everybody!

I am currently waiting for my tank to cycle...and for a change everything seems to be going as plan! :good:
I did some advice however.......I have a 12 gallon (UK) tank and I wanted to get some nice colourful fish...any ideas? Cute and friendly fishies would do nicely as well :D

Sorry.....just realised there are loads of these type of questions tonight.
I'd love to keep clown loaches but I think my tank could be too small?

I wouldn't reccomend a clown loach in your aquarium because they don't really have a set length. I've never owned one, but have seen them and I've seen some that are only 2 inches and some that are almost a foot! I'd wait for someone with more experience to answer your question before deciding against them, though.

I'd suggest making a little stream-like habitat. Some sand, bogwood, and plants. Make it look like a natural home. I'd put some corys and a few rasporas or tetras... nothing too crowded. Of course, that's just me :). I think natural tanks are amazing. They make beautiful displays.

Yeah, at full size clown loaches can get to about a foot, maybe a couple of honey gouramis? nice, small and colourful.

Yeah that's what I thought as I have only ever seen quite big ones.....they are lovely though ;)

Do gourami's not get quite big as well? I quite liked the blue and red striped one (dwark gourami I think) they are cool too. :)

I was looking at your signature...what's a custard betta? :D

lol, custard is his name. :)

Honey gouramis dont get very big, a couple of inches i think. And ye, the ones your talking about are dwarf gouramis.

more like an orangy silvery colour.....you can try groups of fish too, i think groups of fish make a good sight....after your tank is cycled, you should get a school of 5-10 neons with a single dwarf or honey gourami....so your tank bottom wont look bare, try 3-5 cory cats or kuhli loaches....hope all goes well...
Your fish would also benefit if a few plants are added for protection and oxygen....

Is that not too many fish? ;)
What is a good number to keep in my tank? 8? (12 uk gallon/54 litres, 60cm(L) x 30cm(W) x 32cm(H))
I know someone said something about you should keep on average 1 inch of fish per gallon is this correct?

My suggestions fully stock your tank....it should be alright since all the fish i mentioned dont get over 2 inches in length (desite the thin long kuhli loaches) which i assume can easily fit into a tank that size with 5-10 neons) 8 is fine.....Just too make sure about the stocking levels, the dwarf gourami doesnt have to be added.....So it comes to 8 neons and 3-5 kuhli loaches ((OR)) 3-5 cory cats.....
The one inch per gallon rule, does not apply to all fish....For example, you can not keep say a 12 inch oscar in a 12 gallon, or say 2, 6 inch keyhole cichlids in a 12 gallon because both these species need a much larger tank size....The one inch per gallon rule only works with small fish of less than 2inches i assume...(anotha person might want to second my opinion on this one) but i can confidently say that the one inch per gallon rule does not apply to most fish especially those large ones.....

I think the inch per gallon rule is done on US gallons, but as VidVid said, it's a rule of thumb and only works for some fish.

Would it not be sad to keep one gourami on his/her own?
Okay I have been looked at a few fish online......I would like maybe a dwarf gourami (blue/red stripes) or a blue dwarf gourami, some neons and some Cory's can't forget the Corys! I figured the Kuhli loaches might get too big? If I got maybe two gourami's how many neons and Cory's could I get? I know you should keep Cory's in groups of at least 4/5 correct?

Oh...another question....I have been told you should not put more than 5 fish in at a time? What is the best way to add them then? I was also told that once my tank is fully cycled it will be able to handle all the fish at once?? Which is correct? D

I do love neons and Cory's and the gourami's look cool as well but worried about overstocking. :(
One more question......I had a problem with tetra before attacking my Cory's.....do you think the neons will be okay?

If I got maybe two gourami's ...
IIRC it's not a good idea to keep only 2 gouramis together, 2 males will fight and a male and female pair will end up with the male constantly pressuring the female, stressing her out, especially in a smaller tank. :( Unfortunately it can be difficult to buy a single Gourami, it depends on your LFS. I think they would be ok as a pair of females but it's generally considered that the males are more colourful.

That's a shame...I was worried they might get lonely on their own.....but after you have explained the above...it's probably better to keep them apart......is that why most people only keep one Betta as well?
I was going to buy some fish from the website below as most of the lfs's around here don't really stock a lot of variety? Have you ever bought online?

Oh....I am just full of questions today.... :S
I am also planning to add some plants and maybe a ornament(have a small sunken ship)...I am assuming this will reduce the amount of fish I can have....? Yip some plants and something the fish can hide in I thought would be best? :D

i have had in the past 2 pearl gouramis, and the slightly larger 1 kept on harrasing the slightly smaller 1....eventually the larger gourami thrived and the smaller one slowly deteriorated and died....i still keep the surviving pearl gourami in my tank with tiger barbs and an angelfish and all is doing well....

And to you plant question, plants benefit all fish you have in your tank and if you add alot, imo, it will limit how many fish you can have in your tank....same goes with the decorations...a tip. buy plants that would need the same requirements your fish would need....buy some plants that your fish would live with in the wild so they could become more comfortable with their surroundings...also, if your planning a high tech planted aquarium, add a nutrient rich subtrate under your chosen gravel/sand before you buy any fish or plants.....You can put the sunken ship as a decoration and a place to hide in but using driftwod would give you tank a more natural look....
