Hi All,

A little while ago i bought a new approx 140 litre (~36 gallon) tank. I've been cycling the tank now for about 6 weeks and only have just added a couple of small fish. Have a combination of real and plastic plants

Was just wondering how often should i be changing the water in a tank this size and how much water?

I've previously had a very small tank, around 20 litres, this larger one is SO much easier to look after. The water conditions changed way too quick in the smaller tank..

I've included a picture of the tank below;

Nice looking tank there. You must be really excited about stocking it.
Water changes i beleve the recommended is 15-25% every 2 weeks. Dont hold me to that, but i cant see any problems accuring if you use that as a guide.

i have a rio 240 and do a 35%-40% once a week.it really depends on what type of fish you have,how many fish you have,and what filtration you have. :nod:

we have a similar sized tank to you, and we do a 30% water change about once a week, this is also partly to do with the bogwood STILL leaching tannins. but the fish seem to appreciate the change, and it appears to be working well for both them and us!

Yep certainly looking foward to stocking it :) I'm looking for a collection of small colourfull fish, nothing too big. At the moment there are 3 palaties and a 4xtetras in there. They seem to like it so far!

Currently have a internal power filter that cycles the tank maybe 4-6 times an hour (with air tube).

Thanks for the info on water changes, currently doing it about once a week, prob 20-25% but wasn't sure. In my smaller tank i had to take out less water but more often because ammonia would just spike up really quick. This one its very stable (both ammonia and nitrite - i really should get around to getting a nitrate tester too).

I second kat and James reply. You should change the water a little at a time. ABout 30% per week.
