At the moment i have a 25L tank with a few tropical fish, the filter is only good enough to do up to 25l, but i have just got a 60L tank and filter ect and was wondering if i needed to cycle the tank if i put both the new and old filter in the thank, obviously i could do fish in cycle and keep both filters on the go to help the new filter build up its bacteria

PS i have read the cycling guide :)

thanks

If the filter hasnt been out of the tank with the fish in for any length of time then you are good to go.
Just pay attention to water levels (amonia etc) and change water if any of them are high is what I've been told.

Hi barwell

Just transfer the media from the old filter to the new filter (gently) and away you go. Unless you particularly want to have two filters running for some reason.

And sheffieldlad (Paul) how's your fish doing after the changeover?

the new filter is a cartridge type and the old one is a foam/stone type so dont think i can change them over

The cartridge types will open with a bit of persuasion, but I take your point.

hey Prime.
They were doing well but my neons seem to have ich.
Going for meds for them tomorrow.
Any advice?

Thanks,

Paul

Yes. Ich is always a sign of poor water quality, that is too much ammonia. So it looks like your filter isn't coping with your bioload at the moment. Up the temp to 28 (gradually) while dosing the meds, feed only once every other day, make sure your tank is clean, use the meds as per the instructions, but most of all keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrite readings and keep them low. In other words keep the water quality up. Make water changes to keep the ammonia and nitrite in check and add in the right amount of your med each time you change water to keep the dose as stated on the bottle.

Ok Prime, Thank you.
I think I did what I said I wasn't gonna do right at the start which was become impatient and add too many fish too quickly.
I'll up the water changes and follow your advice.

Thanks,

-Paul.

Yeah, I know the 'urge' Paul. It's like that Monty Python sketch with the fat #19### who takes the 'waffer thin mint' then explodes. You have to know when to stop. Anyhow, I hope the fish pull through. best of luck.

Yeah it is. I was too dumb to see it coming.
Live and learn.
