Hi ya people, I'm looking at getting a new(secondhand)tank tomorrow. Its a Juwel tank, 100cm L x 40cm W x 50cm H so think that works out to 200ltr.

It comes with a external fluval 250 filter, and also the orignal internal one, but the guy says it doesnt need this.

Now I'm going to take my time to get everything in the tank how I want it, with some slate and plants. Just wondering on stocking. I've got a Lace Gourami want I'm going to put in it and a bristelnose plec, what else would you recommend? I want to get for a more like natural fish you might see in a river somewhere. I do like flying foxes though.

That looks like a Jewel Rio180

Sounds like you have an existing tank, so you'd be able to use 1/3 of your biomedia to "seed" a fishless cycle to get you to your qualifying week faster and know that you've got a working biofilter prior to putting fish in!

Im not sure what it is actually. You reckon a Rio 180 then? Im picking it up tonight. Really want to go for the natural look with plenty of plants and some slate.

I'm not in any rush really to get fish in, this time next month would be fine just depends how long it takes I guess.

Yeah I have another tank, but I think I'm going to sell that on when this one is ready to take the fish.

It is a Rio 180 (I have got one). Its a nice tank. We have a Fluval 405 on ours. Enjoy :)

Oh right thanks for that.

do you have a pic of yours? need some ideas on what to put in it etc

Ideally, during the 2 months or so of fishless cycling to get the filter ready, you would be better off adjusting the slate but holding off on the plants. Ammonia plus light equals algae. The plants need light and nutrients to live and so with plants in, all that light will be there with the high ammonia dose to trigger algae spores to flourish. If you fishless cycle with just your substrate and slate, the daily water chemistry readings will make much more sense to you. And I'm sure you're aware that this is also the humane way to avoid permanent gill and nerve damage to new fish.

Im looking at fake plants actually, not really into the real plants. That would be ok to put all in together then wouldn't it?

Of course! With fake plants you can just leave the lights off during the fishless cycle except when you are working on the tank, and that's what you should do.

ps. have you got a good kit yet and the right ammonia yet?
