I'm planning a new tank, and need some help with stocking. I have a fairly clear idea of what i want, but i want to bounce ideas off you people with a bit more experience.

The tank is a 285 litres open tank. In particular it is this one: http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/open-top-cabinet-fish-tank-aquarium-285-litres-120cm-4ft-three-colours.html

The stocking i was thinking is as follows:
6 discus
6 german blue rams
10 adolfo corys
20 rummynoses

can I fit a bristlenose or two?

also, i listed rummynoses, but what about cardinals?
should I go for tight shoaling or colours?
could I fit 15 and 15? would it be worth it?

The tank will be fairly heavily planted, with black fine gravel (not sand) and green slate arranged in a "rockery" with caves and hidey-holes.

Not certain about the combination of fish but I can tell you 6 discus is too many for a 285L, at least as adults. As adults I'd expect either 4 discus or a breeding pair in a tank around that size.. and being cichlids they would probably bully one another whilst growing up...
It's often easier to choose your fish according to your water instead of trying to change the water to suit the fish... so what sort of PH and hardness is your water normally?

After mixing half tapwater and half RO water it's about a hardness of 7dH and a ph between 6 and 6.5

Good, the water is suitable then, I'd say you have a good choice of fish. You should be able to house the 6 discus as juveniles but they will eventually outgrow the tank. As for the 15/15 thing I'd say stick to one kind of tetra initially, and add in 15, if you're happy you're not overstocked you may be able to add the other variety, sometimes looking at what's in the tank is the best way to judge. Your tank should also be fine for a BN... just be sure you know what you're taking on, they get quite large and produce quite a lot of waste but provided your filtration is good you should manage.

[...]but provided your filtration is good you should manage.

The tank comes with this filter: http://www.allpondsolutions.co.uk/aquarium-1/aquarium-filters/external-filters/aquarium-external-filter-2000-l-h.html
Would adding a UV light help with keeping the water pristine?

I was planning to remove the pairs once they pair off and replace them with juveniles. I'm not interested in breeding, (not yet at least).
I'm not above falling in love with them and deciding to keep the though! :D

Never seen that particular brand of filter, but google reviews are positive :good: UV lighting does more to control algae than the water itself.. but with killing algae and some bacteria you're increasing the load put on the filter so think carefully about it before saying yes or no. Sadly though i'm probaly not the best person to ask this question as I never bother with UV in my tanks, so we'll have to hope for more replys :)
