hi. i got a well looked after com. tank, and am getting a smaller 10g tank for either a betta or fry, havent decided yet. anyway, i was wondering, if i sorta rubbed/ squeezed the new tanks filter media in the old ones, the good bacteria would pass onto the new filter emmediately, meaning the tank starts up quicker , right ?

thoughts, opinions, experience on the matter ? thnx :good:

If possible put the media from the old, established tank into the new one. The process is called cloning.

Yes this is a very effective way to start up a tank. Just squeezing it into the new filter may not completely cycle the tank so still keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrite levels, but it will definitely help the process.

Just make sure you put the fish in right away after you put the bacteria in, that way it has something to feed off of.

so.. kitty..what about the old tank then ? if i take the media out.. i need to build it up agen ? in a com. tank this would be kinda lethal right ? or do u mean take like a section out?

What kind of filter do you have?

You can take part of it, don't take the entire thing though. Even with removing part of it you would still need to keep an eye on the levels in the old tank. And maybe decrease the feeding a little for about a week or so.

umm not so sure. if it helps my com. tank is the juwel rekord 96..

my newtank is only an aqua cube.. i need to look at the filter

* just realized i put 10g in first post, soz, its only 5.5 g*

not so sure.. i cant find anything on google.. and as the tanks a xmas pres i cant look at box lol.. all i know is its v.small compared to my other 1

yah it is a hob nob (...lol) umm
what would be quicker/better

just starting the lil tank by itself normally
or filling the new tank up, but running the filter in the com. tank?
basiclly, i get it on x mas day, and i wnan get fish asap.

thnx

hi,
it would be great if you could ask kindly if you could have just the filter part, then run this in the main tank till xmas, then as soon as you need the small tank just add conditiond water and the hob-nob.
as its a small filter it would have enough good bacteria by then i would think. :)

ill try that..

not so good when u got the craziest mum on the planet but ow well lol :)

any wayz i havent eaten all day n ima bout to fall asleep im so tired so if u dont mind i think its fish n chips all round.. l8erz
