just bought another tank for the fry,do i move the fry along with the female? will i use a bit of media out of my filter in my main tank,or will the filter be ok with just new media in it,as i would imagine the bioload will be quite small??

cheers

Hi Scotty you finally talked her round then or doesnt she about it..yet? Yes use media from the other filter. As for moving the mother fry ive never done it myself but i know people who have. If i had to do it i would probably use water from the original tank aswell to fill it,so you dont have to mess about acclimatising them to the fresh water,my theory being quick as possible with least amount of stress on the fish, but like i say ive never done it but thats how i would probably go about it.

How old are the fry?

Ian

the fry must be about 10 days old,and are swimming around the tank with the mother, but the numbers are dwindling as the tetras are picking them off,i filled about half the tank with water from my mature tank,am i better to let it settle for a few days?not too sure about movng the mother as maybe she might eat them all if she gets stressed out,i have put the new tank in the shed,so hopefully it will be ok in there.

Perhaps it might be better to temporarily rehome everyone else but the new family?

Use a little mature media, set the tank up with the temperature as close to that of the tank they are in as possible. If you have been keeping up on water changes in the breeding tank, which you probably have been since they are breeding, you should be able to just net them out of one tank & put them in the other.

I never break up breeding pairs unless absolutely necessary. They will more than likely produce more fry, making them more valuable than the fry themselves in a breeding setup. Funny this comes up, I'm picking up a group of juvies today, haven't bred them in a few years & I'm not seeing them around here much.

looks like most of the fry have died, think it was the stress of moving them, maybe just put the male and female in the tank now

Thats good news, but as you know you have a breeding pair they should spawn again hopefully, and you should be more ready for it this time :)

Sam.
