Hi all,

I have a new 60cm interpet tank. Water temp 26

Only thing in it are gravel and 3 ornaments. Am using a Interpet power filter.

It was after 3 days that bloom appeared, i waited another 4 days but it did not clear so i emptied all the water. Again after 3 days bloom and again i waited 4 days. This time i emptied the tank completely. All gravel and ornaments were washed in boiling water.

3 days later bloom reappeared. Now been 3 days and no sign of it clearing.

What should i do ?

It might be one of the ornaments leaching, also is that background in the the aquarium or outside, if it's in it might be that.

Sometimes when a new tank is setup you get a bacteria bloom, this does clear after a few days so it could also be that.

It looks like a normal bacterial bloom, how long has the tank been running, has it cycled and are there any fish in at the moment?

Hi tank has been running for 3 weeks. Now 3 lots of water. No fish or plants have been in tank. Water Last changed on Sunday. If it is bloom how long should it take for it to clear ?

Thanks

As you didn't reply to the question of cycling I'm assuming it's not so the next question is....are you adding ammonia?

Cycling as in filter been running constantly for 3 weeks - yes.

Ammonia ? No.

Not added anything to tank apart from 3 ornaments hed in boiling water.
Filter and heater.

What do you advise.

Thanks

You need to have a read of the fishless cycling topic in the beginners section first. You cannot prepare a filter, ie cycle it, by just leaving it to run. You need to be adding an ammonia source frequently and accurately to grow the beneficial bacteria required to convert fish waste to nitrates (which are then removed with water changes). The bacterial bloom you're seeing is just being caused by the small amount of ammonia in the tank at the moment, once this ammonia is used up any bacteria present will die off, produce ammonia and more bacteria will grow. This will go on indefinitely but not actually get you anywhere with regards to cycling and preparing for fish.

If you read the beginners resource in new tank section there is info on both fish in and fishless cyclig. Quick summary. Either way, the filter goes through various stages as bactria start to colonise the media. Ammonia starts this process, the waste product from fish or added if none in as per a fishless cycle. Next comes nitrite, then nitrate. If you are not adding ammonia, this cycling process will never get off the ground, as there is nothing to feed the bacteria. Take a read fore more in depth details.
