Hello all. I've been wanting to keep tropical freshwater fish for a while, so today I bought a new filter and heater to set up my tank. The filter is a 'FLUVAL 3' which is designed to filter up to 130 L.
My tank is 56 L and the flow seems very strong. I havent added fish yet and i'm concerned whether the current of the filter will be too strong for my fish. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Sure the fluval 3 has a flow adjustment on it which will reduce flow for you, though i dont think it will be a problem.

What fish are you planning on as lots of fish love strong currents.

Thanks for the reply Jon.
I've reduced the flow to minimal, yet it still seems rather powerful. The airflow control device seems to be minimalised also.
I'm hoping to get afew altum angels and maybe a discus or two. Guppies would be good too if I have room.
Having a 56 litre tank doesnt give me much room to play with though. What would you recommend?

56l isn't going to be big enogh for Discus or angels I'm afraid  They both get up to 8 inches in length and about 1 foot of height on them. There probibly wouldn't be enough space for them to streach their fins, let alone swim properly

Guppies are great little fish, though not very hardy. I would wait untill the tank is 6 months old before getting any. They breed like the aquatic equivilant of a rabbit colonie, so be prepaired for 30 fry PER month PER female, or alternatively get all males :good: The females can have 4 broods of youngh from one fertilisation, and you need the females outnumbering the males 2:1, to avoid the females being harrased for sex to a point where they die. My male guppies were regularly seen trying to breed with other species, and though it was extreamly funny, it can get very tiresome for the other fish involved

There is a nice pinned thread for fish suited to a 10 gallon tank, and this is roughly what yours holds. Read through there and you will find many fish suited to your set-up. :good:

Before adding any fish, you need to fishless cycle with ammonia. Most LFS's will get you to cycle with fish, and this will caurse them serious long-term dammage if they are lucky enough to survive  Please do the humane thing and go fishless. There is a pinned thread at the top of this sub-forum telling you how to do this

:hi: to TFF, and all the best

I've got similar sized tank-60 odd litres/15 US gallons. If I'd started again I'd have gone for a dwarf gourami threesome (2 females, one male,) guppies, some form of tetra (possibly black widow or congo's) and cory's/otto's.
