Hey, been looking around for the last week or so for a biggish tank. Came across a pretty good deal today. 55 gallon tank, Stand (metal one, (not great but I'm sure my Father-In-Law needs a new project to work on hehe)), was supposed to come with glass cover and strip light but they sold the light, oops, so instead they gave me a full deluxe hood and light. Said it was a little more expensive than the other, but since they sold it then I could take it. Bought a bag of white sand (50lbs for $12).

Total cost for everything - $171 (inc tax)

Now, just gotta find somewhere to put it! Then I can start cycling, and break our 20 gallon down and sell! :)

Thanks for listening, had to share my good fortune :)

That is how I done I kept looking for deals and Now I have 4-55 gallon tanks, 1-180 gallon 2-40 gallons-2 30 gallons and 3-20 long not counting all the betta tanks and 10 gallon tanks. My house is covered with fish tanks...

Wow, I couldn't keep up with all of those.

I'm going to be doing a fishless cycle, using some filter media and gravel from my 20 gallon.

Any tips?

With adding used filter media and gravel, you should be ready for fish immediately. No real cycling needed as you will already have established nitrates. If it was me, I would even do a large water change on the 20 and put the water in the new tank...just a little added security.

Good deal on the tank! My 55 with hood, lights, and oak stand was around $500!

Have you read the fihlecc cycling article in the beginner section?

And congrats on the new tank!!!

Thanks.
Yeah, I've read it, but that says one thing, and then other articles say something different. And it's not exactly clear how much ammonia you should be adding each day. And then I looked in the store for ammonia, found some in the cleaning aisle with 'clear ammonia' on it, checked the back and it said it had 'sufactants' and 'opacifiers' or something in it. It sudded up when i shook the bottle, so now i need to find out where i can get some pure ammonia from....
