Hi everyone im new to this forum so hello to all, anyway im going to start setting up a shrimp tank but i dont know which tank to use i have a 40 litre a 60 litre and a 110 litre tank just sitting around doing nothing but i dont know which would be best, i dont need to worry about space as the location its going in will hold any of the 3 tanks so if you can help me and tell me what you think would be best that would be great,
I also have a 240 litre (4 foot) setup as a tropical community tank.

thanks

Matt

It all depends on what kind of shrimp you want to keep and what your intentions are. If it is for something the size of cherry shrimp, then the 40 litre would make a good display tank, but the 60 litre would make a better breeding tank due to the extra floor space (based on standard tank sizes).

I used to breed cherries in a 60l and ended up with hundreds and hundreds after 6 months.

thanks i think i might go with the 60l as it was cherries i was looking at, do you know what other types would be nice to have with the cherries maybe something a little larger in size.

thanks

As long as you do not mix any other neocaridina species then you should be ok. Otherwise there is a chance of inter breeding. Most people pick red or black crystals, but to make it a little different, tigers would look good.

thanks for your help now i just gotta start setting up and get my tank cycled, do you think rams would eat the shrimp? o german blue rams not bolivian

Yes they would. I would set up a shrimp only tank with dark substrate and lots of moss, plants and bogwood.

ok cool can the moss and plants go in while its being cycled? i've never really had plants before sp this will be kinda new for me

I guess that you will be using media from your larger tank? If so, I would be tempted to stock with cherries from the start as their bioload is small and should be covered with the bacteria which you bring over. They are fairly hardy as far as shrimp go, but keep an eye on the stats daily for the first week or so.

yeah i am gonna use media from my other tank, i'll be starting everything next week so i'll update with how things are going, i just gotta hope one of my lfs has some shrimp i want

Cherries are normally expensive in shops, so check the classifieds section. The same goes for moss.

cheers for the heads up just checked the classifieds and it looks like a few people have some so thats cool
