Hi, I am setting a new brackish water aquarium and would like some feedback on my fish selection and setup.

fish:
moray eel
green spotted puffer
2 Columbian sharks

All of the above fish were sold to me as fresh water so I am in the process of upping the salinity. It is currently at 0.004. The two sharks are in a 20g and the eel and puffer are in another 20 but they will all be in a 60gal once I have it setup.

I will be using a fluval 304 canister filter. I am going to use sand with some dark gravel mixed in for the substrate with boulders and some driftwood as decoration. I plan on taking this aquarium all the way to full marine and will upgrade the size to accommodate the sharks.

My concerns are: About how fast will my sharks grow (how long do I have till I need a larger tank)? Is there a certain kind of sand I should get? My puffer has a black spot on his belly that does not go away. His entire belly will darken when he gets scared but that dark spot never goes away. Should I be concerned about this? At the moment the puffer will only eat dried krill. I have given him ghost shrimp and "pest" snails but he does not touch them. Should I be concerned? When I combine these two tanks into one are there any precautions or specific task I should be aware of?

Any other thoughts are welcomed. Thanks.

I really am no expert but aren't Morays full Marine from the start! One thing I do know they get big, messy are aggressive and will eat most tank mates that are small enough to fit in their mouths.

I have a "freshwater" moray eel. This doesn't usually get as large and I am fairly well read on them. I know that he will do quite well in the aquarium I have supplied him and the salinity levels that he requires. I also know that many aquarist have had success with raising them with GSP, which is them smallest fish I have.

is it a Gymnothorax Tiles moray?

I bought one yrs ago as freshwater but they are definately brackish. Mine were in quite a high sg

lovely fish to keep but I would suspect it would eat the puffer. Mine that was about 18 inch eat a larger puffer I once introduced

It is a Gymnothorax Tiles moray. He is still in low salinity but I plan to bring it all the way to full marine. I have browsed for compatibility issues with it and puffers. There were a lot of success stories and a few not so much. They get along fine right now. The eel will be chasing minos and come up to the puffer then back off and leave it alone. The puffer doesn't even pay any attention to him. Hopefully it works out.

Wow....just had a little read up on them....nice fish!

I've only just moved up from F8's to Gsp's and have two juvies at the moment...Still in one piece too!!!!
My two eat anything that is put in the tank;blood worms, prawns in the shell, snails etc. Could the mark be an old wound? My F8's used to fight and leave perfect circle bite marks on each others bellies!
The man you need to talk to to here is Neale [NMonks]....he'll be the most help here and will no doubt be a long shortly.
