hi setting up my 100l tank today to the marine side of things!

currently in the tank is 2inches sand, 10kg of live rock, nano powerhead, heater and a wet and dry trickle filter system!

the question is is it essential i use a protein skimmer?
the reason i ask is if i do i will need to cut a hole into the lid of my tank and dont really want to do this lol

i plan on keeping a few corals with gobies clownfish perhaps sea horses plus CUC

thanks #43###

How exciting

currently in the tank is 2inches sand,

bit more than i would have put in, but fine :good:

10kg of live rock

:good:

nano powerhead
does it have x 20 turnover and is there surface agitation?

heater
:ggod:

and a wet and dry trickle filter system!
Why would you need this?

No, with a tank this small 20-25% water changes each week would be :good:

Eeeeekkk, few corals, are fine, goby is fine, I wouldnt keep Clowns in a tank this small, but some people do  and sea horses require a specialist tank without the other things you have mentioned

thanks #43###

What lighting do you have?

Keep us upto date and how about a photo?

well i think you can keep clown fish in a 100L tank but it depends on what type. also your tank would be more 90L because of the rock. :good:

great response, i have to use the wet and dry filter as it it intergrated into the tank and there is no way of by passing it, i also figured as iam not using a skimmer that it would benefit ( its got to help at least :) ) the filter trickles down from the hood so this gives good surface agitation as well as power head would you agree??

ok no sea horses then! thanks for that and i will put lost of consideratoin into the clowns

any other requirements ? comments?

thanks

A protein skimmer would benefit your tank by removing proteins from the water, but isn't a neccesity.

Yes it would help to agitate the surface as you need to be getting oxygen into the tank (the whole purpose of the agitation).

NO seahorses if you are planning on keeping other fish! But although Seffie may disagree with me  it is ok in my opinion to keep Clownfish in a 100L tank :good:

i see sea horse in with other fish at my LFS with no problem really like the look of them but dont no much about them , i would prefer fish so looks like sea horses out the window wouldnt want to risk losing one espically at 50quid a pop!

i have just converted the tank from fresh to salt, i hear you goin on about adding oxygen so could i use my old air pump and air stone in the tank?/?

thanks!

Yes using a airpump to insert oxygen into the tank is a good idea.
A powerhead is extremely useful if you are looking to provide circulation to your live rock, as it needs good circulation to help the bacteria on the rock.

yes i have a power head,

so you reckon with 10kg live rock 2" sand heater built in filter( although not required) powerhead, air pump/air stone and week 15% water changes i should be on to a good thing?

With Live Rock, weight isn't necessarily the best thing, as you want porous rocks ideally, as you may get a MASSIVE peice of rock which weighs barely anything. But 10Kg is sufficent if you want to look at it in terms of Kilos.

For sand you will need Aragonite sand, NOT silcone sand. Do you live in England? As I can give you a link to where I got my sand and they are very good on prices.

And the rest yes, is spot on :good:

why dont you have a read on simonas journal and mine and maybe seffies because they are all almost the same size tank as yours :good:

We dont use airstones in marine tanks - we aim a powerhead to the surface so that we gets lots of surface agitation :good:

In a tank your size a skimmer is not a MUST have, but a 20% weekly water chnge is :D 25% even better.

No need for a skimmer. Regular weekly water changes on a nano should be fine. My tank is 5 years old and I have a five year old clown and 4 year old goby and 0 nitrates. I never skim. 10-20% weekly water changes do the trick.
