I have been keeping cold-water fish for many years and tropical fish for around twelve months and currently have two tanks, one cold, one tropical. My two sons, who are 9 and 8 have been showing an interest for some time now and this Christmas my sister gave them her 34 litre tank with heater and filter.

Whilst I will be monitoring the tank, the kids will be doing the majority of the work (they already care for a hamster and a crested gecko) so I am after some ideas for stocking the tank, and would really appreciate your knowledge and experience.

My requirements are:

Easy maintanance aquatic life
Something fairly hardy as it is a small tank and therefor more suseptible to water fluctuations.

Their reqirements are:

Something fun and interesting!

I am open to any suggestions, so far we have considered :

Bettas (They were slightly put off by having just one fish!)
Crabs
Starfish (Too high maintanance, too small a tank)
Aquatic frogs
Guppies (Although we have previously been put off by their fin nipping)
Shrimp

I already have Cory's, Tetra, Dwarf Gourami, Mollies (several adults and lots of fry we are trying to rehome), a Banjo Catfish, Shrimp, a Platy, a Golden Barb, Goldfish, Mountain Minnows, and a snail problem :) and I am awaiting two assasin snails...

As mentioned previously, any sugestions would be welcome, and if possible your reasons for your recomendation really appreciated!

Thanks for reading, and in advance for your comments,

Claire.

tetras and barbs are out of the picture realy, guppies shouldnt really fin nip although they have been noted to do this. have they considered endler?

as for crabs, you could keep Land hermit crabs do a bit of research on them.

and aquatic frogs you could keep about 4 ADF's(afrocan dwarf frogs) NOT ACF's (african clawed frogs) VERY IMPORTANT!!!!
