Hello all, I'm going to take the dive into Saltwater fish. I just have 2 questions (I'm a newbie to saltwater):

#1-All of my tanks have been cycled for freshwater fish for over a year, when I pick a tank to convert to saltwater does it need to be cycled again? Or do I just keep the same filters and add salt?

#2-I love large mean fish, I own the largest meanest cichlids (Dovii and Umbee) and I would like something similiar for my freshwater tank, any suggestions? Something that will grow quickly and large, that is very mean and interactive throughout the tank.

Any advice will help :)

no, the osmotic presure will kill all of the cycle bacteria, sorry.

as for large mean fish they need large tanks with big filters, I think you need to tell us about your tanks and research filters before you look at fish, at this point it would be irresponsible of me to give suggestions I think

Thanks for the response, I will either switch my 125g tank setup to SW or my 240g tank, so I do have big tanks for a nice predator.

So I have to buy all new filters? I was told that my 2 cannisters will be fine in saltwater just like they worked with freshwater, is this true?

Oh your filterswill work just fine, but you will need to buy more filters (probably) and you will need to buy powerheads and if you really want to do it well set up a sump.

240 is a good size for predators, gives you room to have a few different preds in the same tank, far more interesting IMHO

240 is a good size for predators and large fish. Navarre will be able to suggest some predatory fish for a tank that size. I know that you could start, at that size, to keep some small bottom dwelling sharks. SH

Thanks for the advice so far everyone, I don't think I will have too much of a problem setting the tanks up because I have been around fish for years, I've been educating myself on the extras that I need.

Any suggestions on fish, that way while I'm setting the tank up and cycling it I can budget my money and find the best fish available, I'm open to all predatory options. I love the color of marine fish and I would like one large specimen in the tank. Feel free to give me a couple of suggestions because I might convert my 125g as well.
