hi iv just got back into fish and bought a big rena tank 370 litres. as i like things tidy and rite from the start iv been looking on ebay and the net at some of the new equipment that i havent seen before. firstly i take it my 300w heater wont be enough for this size tank as it seems to be 1w per litre of water? now i really like the idea of an external heater and hydor seem to look ok also iv noticed that rena make a heater called smartheater that somehow connects to my external xp3 filter but if you do that will the heater still have to be inside the tank or if connected to the filter does it then live outside like the hydor in line heater? if i did get a hydor heater 300w then i wouldnt think it would be enough so would i have to buy 2 hydors and connect them in line together and can this be done? can you put two rena smart heaters in line? please any help guys would really help me set it up properly. oh last question, i was thinking on sand for the bottom but how do you clean it as i would of thought a siphon type gravel cleaner would just hoover sand up unlike gravel? any advice would be great.

Welcome to the forum Chris.
The 300W heater will be a bit anemic for a 370 litre tank. If the room temperature is close to the desired temperature, it might be enough. We use a fairly cool room when deciding that 1W/l is enough. I have not tried using the external heaters so I can't help with your questions about connecting them.
To clean sand with a gravel vac you simply hold the inlet a bit above the sand, about a cm above it, and the light weight dirt moves while the sand stays in place. I have done this and sometimes pick up a bit of sand but as soon as I pinch the flow the sand falls back and I can then resume cleaning the surface.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply to my question. So is sand not alot more work to keep clean than gravel then? i do think it looks alot more natural to stones. any other feedback would be great, thanks.

Sand will show the dirt faster than gravel because the dirt does not fall down between the grains and out of sight. The actual cleaning needs are the same but the sand will make the fish waste more visible. Sand also looks nicer when it is clean. I compromise on many of my tanks and use a coarse sand / fine gravel as a substrate. This means that it has many of the advantages of both gravel and sand. Have a close look at this to see what I mean about coarse sand. The fish in the picture are less than an inch, 2.5cm, long.
