Hi everyone. I've just joined the forum as I am hoping to set up a new aquarium (tropical) and could do with some advice. I did keep a smallish tank a few years ago so have some experience but I am looking to have a much larger tank this time, probably 75cm wide x 120cm high x 40cm deep, to be built into a disused cupboard.

The first question I have is this - is it ok to put mirrored glass behind the tank instead of a coloured backdrop? Or will this confuse/upset the fish/tempt them to swim into it? I plan to have live plants so there will somewhere for the fish to hide but I really like the idea of visually doubling the depth of the tank. Any thoughts? Or anyone done this?

Hi Lynda,

some fish (notably betta's, there may be others) won't like having a mirror there, they think they're reflection is a competitor and try to fight it. however for most fish it's absolutely fine. You can buy tanks which come with a mirrored background

Great, thanks!

Can anyone recommend a supplier of made-to-measure acrylic tanks? I'm looking for one 750mm wide x 1000mm high x 400mm deep & have emailed a few off the internet but any recommendations (or even any to avoid!) would be gratefully received. Thanks.
